Clay Classes

Young clay enthusiasts will be given an opportunity to get their hands dirty and enjoy creating fun, yet surprisingly sophistaced, clay sculpture. We'll wedge, roll, coil, slab, paddle, pinch, cut and press our way through engagin clay projects each day. Everyone will be challenged at a level appropriate to their age and skill level. Campers will learn how a lump of raw clay can transform in their hands into lovely objects, useful in the home or garden. Clay pieces will be fired in our on-site kiln. A variety of decorative media—such as low-fire glazes, slips, and watercolor paint—will be used to give each project a finished appearance. Every week we'll offer new projects. No repeats.

Clay I
Grades K-2

Youngsters in this class will enjoy a successful introduction to clay while building stronger motor skills and three-dimensional comprehension. We will coil, slab, pinch, roll, texturize and smooth our way through fun and engaging projects each week in a guided, step-by-step fashion which encourages creativity and nurtures individual vision. Each week the children will start with lumps of raw clay and—by the end of the session—will transform them into lovely, creative sculpture that will last a lifetime! Children will finish their pieces with a variety of media including lowfire glazes, slips, and watercolor paint.

Clay II
Grades 3-5

This class is for students who enjoy working with clay and want to take their skills a step further by learning advanced techniques. We will create clay sculpture that is fun and engaging. Older children in the group will investigate greater detail in both design and glazing.

Clay III
Grades 6-8

As a creative outlet for young teens, this class offers just the right balance of structure and freedom. Guidance, encouragement and constructive feedback are offered as students venture into their own artistic interests and discover deeper levels of self-understanding. Art history is woven into the themes presented with each lesson. Young artists can see for themselves how their art is a singularly unique creation but also a reflection of the many artists before them in history. Projects will vary in length of execution from one class to three weeks, demonstrating the various challenges and opportunities that clay offers as an artistic medium.
